Interestingly, in the "underground" area of the design there are several Japanese characters embedded. One of them I recognize: "history." This stamp commemorates the opening of the National Museum of History and Folklore, so I bet the other characters I can't make out easily are that.
There are several other Japanese stamps where the character (kanji) is incorporated into the design, and I'm fond of them all.
