It's only just occurred to me that listings for this country on this website involve se-tenant, bilingual stamps. Being as Canada is a bilingual country, I was wondering if the South African stamps were originally sold in pairs for the same reason.

    Yes, but more becsuse of politics than heritage. The short answer is that the Dutch Afrikaners and the English speaking whites did not get along very well during that period.. Being the first Europeans to settle South Africa and the ones usually in control, the Afrikaners wanted their own stamps.
