1841 1d red imperfs - How to differeniat plates 1b-177

Hey Guys does anybody have any info on books, electronic downloads that give a simplistic way of identifying plates, ay help would be greatly appreciated.

    The plate numbers are in the scroll work along the right and left sides. And they are at about the middle of her nose.

  • Michael, those plate numbers in the scroll work on the sides are only on the 1864 issue, Scott #33 (Pl#71 - 225). The earlier stamps are much more difficult to figure out the plate numbers.
  • The primary way to distinguish different plates for the 'Penny Stars' (i.e. the perforated ones before those with letters in all 4 corners) and the imperfs is by the various 'alphabets' (= fonts, in effect) used and then by the precise position and angle of the lower corner letters. It's not an easy task but, with practice and a lot of material to examine, it could be satisfying - and possibly lucrative!
