Stamp Hinges

On newer stamps (beginning with #1522, the first US self-adhesive stamp) what is the current trend for housing the
stamp - mounts or hinged. If you hinge the stamp w/attached backing, is it considered MH (mint hinged) or M (mint)?

  • Mounts.
Generally speaking the only acceptable stamps to be hinged are used, because soaking the hinge off is no different from soaking the stamp off a cover.

However, I would advise against hinges for mounting, as they bring other issues that can result in a damaged stamp.
The preference is for mounts, as it also has the benefit of presenting the stamp in a more esthetically pleasing way (in my view) and you can always use a clear mount instead of black background if you like that "stamp on page" look.

Now, regarding your self-adhesive stamp, that's an amusing pondering, which I think could be argued either way. Since the issue of hinges to stamps with OG is that it disturbs the OG, with a self adhesive stamp with a hinge, where the hinge can be removed essentially without leaving a mark, then I would say there is no difference.
