US Scott 459

US Scott 459 is still one of 95 that I do not own. My question is why is there are only pairs for sale? I have been looking for about a year now. And always only pairs. Why….

  • U.S. #459 – the Only Imperforate U.S. Rotary Press Coil
U.S. #459 is the very first stamp produced by rotary press – and the only imperforate rotary press coil in U.S. postal history. The 2¢ Washington stamp was issued June 30, 1914

U.S. #459 was produced in a single printing, and a mere 21,000 stamps were issued.
Unlike other coil stamps of the period, this issue is difficult to successfully fake by trimming the perforations. It is the only imperforate 2¢ Washington type I coil stamp produced by rotary press, so pairs must be genuine. Singles could only be faked by trimming the perforations from a 2¢ Washington coil stamp perforated 10 vertically (Scott 453), and the resulting margins at the side would be very small and unconvincing.
