UPSS Designation For Die 28F6 ?

I have a recent APEX Certificate for a U.S. cut square that I submitted and the certificate states that it is a UPSS, Die 28F6, Type 1. My thought when I submitted it was that it could be a forgery. Without having a UPSS catalog, I'm not sure what the "F6" designation means. I assume the "F" means forgery. Is this correct ?7818E560-81BA-4BA1-9544-84E4B91BB71D

  • You would think that there would have been a better description, Did you pay $$ for this Certificate?
  • Looks like a U66 lemon on buff, the margins suggest that it's a proof. I have the postal stationary proof catalog, but it's not with me at the moment. I'll have a look when I'm in my office later.

  • Scott, that would be much appreciated. I purchased it as a U66 Lemon several years ago and the paper never seemed right to me. More like fawn paper. Also it has been pointed out that the "NINE" seems really close to the oval line. Curious to see if it is listed in your proof catalog.
  • Hi Roger,
I'm inclined to disagree with the APEX on this. First of all, they've used a reference that is not how the UPSS addresses essay/proof material. For instance, they have said 28F6 as the UPSS reference, but the UPSS reference indexes using E[variation]. So it would look more like E28A if it were the 28 Die.in UPSS. That die is E28A (there are no others) and no reference to "Type" of any kind. This is also a two-color impression (all on buff paper), where this is a single (lemon) color on cut square.

I'm not a specialist in this area, however, I don't see anything in the UPSS that resembles your square. The closest is the E17B which is the 10c denomination of this issue, but it is listed only as rose-red on white or buff.
I think APEX have this wrong. It still is my inclination that this is a U66 (U22 Design). You might submit it to the PF for their opinion, and if it differs from APEX, they will refund you.
