Item Description
1841 Austria Stampless folded letter on gilt-edged paper with black Hamburg 16 Mar... (March) two-line dated cancel at right --- 1/10 in script at upper left --- indistinct script number at upper right --- addressed to Mr. T. H. Parker, Bookseller to the University, Oxford, England --- I 20 MR 20 1841 (March) red circular dated cancel on back flapOxford March 20 1941 B black circular dated back stamp on back flap --- Have the complaisance to address your letter Mr. T. Boldemann at M. Helfert, Hamburg in script on inside flap --- seal is present with thinning and tiny tear on corresponding back flap --- letter paper is gilt-edged with J. Whatman 1837 watermark
Letter is dated Prague 12th March 1841 and begins, Most respected Sir --- the writer says, "Although Ihave not the honour to be acquainted with you, I take liberty to address myself to you, in hope not to be mistaken." --- he continues, "Having learned bookselling in my native town Lubeck (von Rohden'sche Buchhandlung) served at different other important [G]erman booksellers"
He relates, "For example Mr. T. G. Heyse in Bremen Mr. Marcus in Rom & now Mrss Gottl[ieb] Haase Sons first booksellers & printers in Prague" --- he requests, "My only wish is now getting occasion to become acquainted with English bookselling and to perfect my knowledge in English language and literature, where I am very fond of." (errors in original) --- he explains, "I should like to get a place in your shop. Mr. John Mavray is acquainted with me. I saw him in Cologne in summer 1838 and he gave me your catalogue of books."
He suggests, "Should I have the honour to be engaged by you I might assure you, Sir, to do all my possible for your bu[s]iness (house) and to spread your books in all parts of [G]ermany where they are still little known" --- "vertatur!" at lower right corner of first page of letter is presumably a Latin instruction to turn the page --- he adds, "I speak pretty well [E]nglish though I am more accustomed to [F]rench."
He closes, "i beg your pardon, sir, for my liberty and waiting for your answer in what respect it may be" --- signed, i remain, sir, your most obedient servant, charles boldemann, care of gottlieb haase sons booksellers in prague, altstÄdter ring --- rough puncture at center of letter --- diagonal creases at right corners of unfolded letter paper with soiling at upper right corner, but otherwise slight soiling --- creases from folding;
