The Encyclopedic Athenaeum of Barcelona scheduled for the spring of 1916 an excursion to Madrid and Toledo, which he had already done two years before, with an expected duration of five days. The ABC newspaper, dated February 17, 1916, remarked that about four hundred atheists would arrive by train on April 20. To promote this visit, the Excursions Section of the Popular Encyclopedic Athenaeum published some âpropaganda stampsâ made by F. Tubau. There were twelve vignettes published in different colors that could be cut and attached to albums or mail envelopes, although they lacked postal value. Those âstampsâ were already made in mid-February, as recorded in La Vanguardia on 22 of that month.
The excursion had to take place a few days before the planned ones, possibly between April 11 and 16, 1916, if we take into account that on the 12th, in the afternoon, the atheists were received in the Congress of Deputies, as a Photograph reproduced in the ABC newspaper of the following day.
Sources of the Ateneu Enciclopedic, cultural institution of great relevance in the city of Barcelona, ââattest to us that it was a trip organized by its president Josep Maria de Sucre, renowned Catalan painter and writer, and that in Madrid they contacted intellectuals such as Miguel de Unamuno and Ramiro de Maeztu.
We have not located news about the stay of the ateneÃstas in Toledo but at least we can enjoy those vignettes made to promote our city in Barcelona in 1916. The most characteristic monuments, reproduced in countless postcards at that time, are those that Tubau collected in his drawings and now we can enjoy all.
