Item Description
Australia, Scott #1226 used (o), 1991, Explorers, 200th Anniversary of the Visit of George Vancover (1755-1798) to Western Australia in 1791; Vancover was a British naval officer and explorer; he departed England with two ships, HMS Discovery and HMS Chatham in1791 charged with exploring the Pacific region; the expedition visited Australia and New Zealand collecting botanical samples and surveying coastlines; he formally claimed Possession Point in Western Australia, now the town of Albany, as a British possession; the stamp also commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the overland trek of Edward John Eyre (1815-1901), also to Western Australia in 1841; Eyre was a land explorer and colonial administrator; in 1841, Eyre, John Baxter and three aborigines left the colonial settlement at Adelade and treked, following the coastline, almost 2,000 miles to the settlement at Albany in Western Australia; at the three-quarter point on the journey, two of the aborigines killed Baxter and left with most of the supplies; Eyre and the aborigine Wylie were only able to survive and continue the trek through a chance encounter with a French whaling ship under command of an Englishman Captain Thomas Rossiter, for who Eyre named the rescue location Rossiter Bay, mailing value: $1.05, multicolored, Scott 2019 catalog value: 65¢. Slightly off-centered, quarter circular socked-on-the-nose cancellation just into the central image, sound back, hinge remnant, good perforations; freshness of the stamp and cancellation warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offer; the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.30 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.58 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
