Dear Miss Helen,
We arrived in this delightful place Saturday week and had quite a comfortable journey till the last day, when it rained heavily. Fortunately, we had but a mile and a half to ride from the depot, and staid till Tuesday morning at Mr. James McCall, and then came on to Mrs. Cusak's, where we are staying now. We will not get into our own house till some time in January, and I am not at all anxious to move. The house has been a very nice one, it has six rooms and it is plastered and glazed, but the plastering is down in every room but one, and it leaks a great deal. We can stop the leak, but the plastering must stand so.
Ma and Pa have both had bad colds, but are better now. I am much better and have a splendid appetite. We are in a very nice house. I have a fireplace in my room. We have an abundance, bacon plentiful, and just as much wood and light-wood as we can burn.
We cannot live here, if our lives are spared so long, 'till the first of May scarcely. Bilious fever, chills and fever, and typhoid fever commence as soon as then.
I cannot write more, as the man is going. Give our love to all our friends. Remember us to Emily and your Mother. I hope E. is much better, and the baby is quite well. My pen is so awful, I can scarcely make a mark with it. I am in a desperate hurry.
I remain yours truly,
M.A. Toomer

We live fifteen miles from the depot. Ma says she cannot ask you to come and stay with us in such an uncomfortable place. Do write me very soon, and tell me all the news of Charleston.
