Historical note: the protectorate of bohemia and moravia was established by germany after it invaded and occupied czechoslovakia before the beginning of world war ii. The initial invasion of the majority-ethnic-german region of the sudetenland was permitted by other signatories of the treaty of versailles under the munich agreement in 1938.
This portion was annexed to germany, but the german leadership saw this capitulation as an opening and invitation to further action, and in march 1949 moved into the rump state as well, putting the entire country under german occupation. They established a new, nominally autonomous, german-administered territory under ethnically czech leadership.
These events are often understood as having encouraged the german leadership's sense of impunity before the invasion of poland in 1939 that began world war ii, and the former czechoslovakia remained under german control under the formal german surrender ended the war in 1945.
