Historical note: during world war ii, malta was the keystone of the air and naval battle for control over the mediterranean sea. The siege of malta lasted from june 1940 until november 1942, and therefore began in earnest only a few months after this cover was posted. Malta is a small island not far from the southern tip of the island of sicily.
Most critically, however, it was at the time a British possession capable of acting as an unsinkable aircraft carrier that relied on imports for almost all consumable supplies, including foodstuffs and fuel. As World War II began, and particularly after the Battle of France was quickly succeeded by the Battle of Britain, the United Kingdom's resources were stretched very tight.
Little was available to be committed to the defense of Britain's Mediterranean possessions when in June 1940, German General Erwin Rommel was sent to open a new front in North Africa. Rommel quickly pointed out that without control of Malta, the Axis would be unable to guarantee the safety of ships and convoys crossing the Mediterranean, which could potentially deprive their forces in Africa of reliable logistics and supply.
During the siege, the German Luftwaffe and the Italian Regia Aeronautica flew thousands of raids in an effort to bomb and starve the island. Eventually, however, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the British and eventually American navies were able to get enough shipping through to the island to maintain the its defenses.
By the end of 1942, the allies had won the second battle of el alamein and landed forces in vichy french morocco and algeria, forcing the axis to divert its efforts into the battle of tunisia, after which time, the allied forces on malta proved their worth and went on the defensive, sinking 230 axis ships in 164 days by may 1943.
