Item Description
The item in this listing is a single used postage stamp issued for use in the German Karolinen (Caroline Islands) colony in 1901. This stamp is postally used, and is listed in Scott as #11, and has a face value of 25 pfennig. As is typical for German colonial issues, the stamp shows the Kaiser’s yacht, SMS “Hohenzollern”. 2020 CV $14.50 for a used stamp, exclusive of the cancel. This stamp was cancelled at the German post office at Angaur, which was open between 1909 and 1914. This cancel has an additional value in the ARGe catalog of 30 euros for an on-piece strike.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
The Karolinen colony was purchased from Spain in 1899, following Spain's loss to the United States in the 1898 Spanish-American war. Spain, having lost control of Guam and the Philippines, had no need for the remaining Spanish-controlled islands in the Pacific, so sold them to Germany for 25 million pesetas.
Germany maintained the colony until 1914. The colony was very spread out, and Japanese forces were able to quickly take over control by the end of August, 1914. The Carolines, as well as the Marianas, were given to Japan as a League of Nations mandated territory, but were effectively annexed to Japan until the end of World War II.
After the War, the Carolines, the Marianas, and the formerly-German Marshall Islands were all given to the United States as a UN Mandate, which lasted until the 1990's. The majority of the Caroline islands became independent in 1986 as the "Federated States of Micronesia", excepting only the western-most district, which became a separate nation, The Republic of Palau, in 1994.
The island of Angaur (now spelled Ngeaur) is an island-state of the Republic of Palau, located at the country's southern edge. The state of Ngeaur has 130 residents as of 2012. The German post office here was one of five located in the Caroline islands.
