Item Description
This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1883, listed as Scott #46. This stamp is mint, with a hing remnant as is typical for stamps of this period. Centering is poor, but is typical for this issue and the time period. Truly well centered Hawaiian issues are few and far between. The history of the stamp is as follows:
This stamp shows the portrait of William Pitt Leleiohoku II, the brother of King Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani. Leleiohoku was named as Kalakaua's heir presumptive when Kalakaua became King, but the new Crown Prince died of rheumatic fever at the age of 22, two years into his brother's reign. This left their sister, Lili`uokalani, to ascend the throne in 1891 when Kalakaua himself died.
Stamps of this design (Scott #36) were first issued in 1875, at the beginning of Kalakaua's reign. Stamps issued in that year were printed in black, and saw a lot of use paying double-weight letters sent to the United States under the provisions of the 1870 US-Hawai`i postal convention. (Single weight letters were rated at 6 cents).
Following Hawaiian admission to the UPU on 1 January 1882, the rate for letters sent to the US and other UPU members were in multiples of 5 cents, rendering the 12c stamp obsolete for its original purpose, but the denomination was reissued in 1883 in red lilac (Scott #46, this stamp) as single weight letters to specific Pacific states (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Samoa) now cost 12 cents. Additionally, 12 cents paid the per-pound rate for parcels sent to the United States, and could have been used to pay unusual rates like heavy international printed matter rates or a domestic registered letter.
None of these later uses--particular the letters sent to other Pacific nations--generated much in the way of usage volume, so the 1883 Scott #46 ended up being one of the least issued denominations among all the postal issues of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Subtracting the number known to have been overprinted in 1893 by the "Provisional Government", just 26,250 examples of #46 were issued. Just four others (Scott 52C, 5c "deep indigo" shade, Scott 47--25c, Scott 48--50c, and Scott 49--$1) were issued in fewer quantities than this.
