Item Description
Iceland issued this set of 4 singles depicting the 4 events in which they would compete at the 100th Olympic Games, held that year in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA. The four colorful stamps show the Marathon, the Javelin Throw, the Long Jump, and the Shot Put. Other events in which the Icelanders participated were Men's and Women's Swimming, Gymnastics, and Badminton. Unfortunately no Icelandic athletes placed higher than 68th in their events. :o(This Handcolored cachet shows the Puffin Cachets mascot running in the Olympic Torch Relay, the flame of which he has somehow quite cleverly made to burn with the colors of the Icelandic flag!
The cover bears the 4 stamps, and two nice cancels of the official First Day of Issue pictorial cancel from Reykjavík, the capital city, depicting the Olympic Rings.
The reverse bears the PUFFIN CACHETS logo, and designates this as cover #3 of only 8 covers sent to Iceland for servicing!
