PHILATELIC-LITERATURE is an essential part of any collection. My first philatelic book was "Part One" - the Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth catalogue. It was bought for me by my aunt in England and posted to me in Dar Es Salaam for my birthday. I don't think there were any stamp shops in Tanganyika; at least I didn't know of any.
But back home any town of any size had a stamp shop. And the Strand in London - well I believed it was the centre of the world's stamp trade. There were dealers there who would spend their time talking to a schoolboy who clearly didn't have much to spend. But it was my local stamp shop in Watford where I was always made particularly welcome. The shop had a contract with Kodak which had a processing plant in nearby Hemel Hempstead. In those days people would send their films in Kodak's trademark yellow envelopes to Hemel to be processed. Those were truly the days of the British Commonwealth. Yellow envelopes containing films to be processed arrived in Hemel from all over the world. At least that's how it seemed.... The Watford stamp shop received the stamps (on paper) from Kodak and a large part of the shop's business was to soak off the stamps and sell them retail via their stockbooks. Thousands of nice commercially used stamps, and of course being airmail packets there were lots of high values!
From time to time I would take home a bag or two of the stamps (on paper), soak them in the bath, dry them, sort them and bundle them. The process took quite some time - and a fair bit of space. It was probably the second philatelic activity which put money in my pocket, albeit just a few pounds. I will write about the earlier adventure next time.
Enjoy our great hobby!
