Item Description
This original 1923 postcard offers a rare glimpse into life aboard the italian battleship _r.N. Dante alighieri_, combining naval photography, military correspondence, and postal history.1️ philatelic:
Franked with three 10 centesimi Italian stamps, postmarked SPEZIA 7 XI 23, and addressed to the HOTEL ROYAL AQUILA IN GENOA. The card is part of the "CARTOLERIA NAVALE UGO PUCCI" SERIES, specialized in naval subjects and issued in La Spezia, an important Italian naval base.
2️ Aesthetic:
The front depicts the _Regia Nave Dante Alighieri_, Italy’s first dreadnought battleship, in full steam at sea. A powerful composition reflecting the might of early 20th-century naval engineering and the aesthetics of Italian military postcards.
3️ Social:
Written by LIEUTENANT GIUSEPPE PORTIMEATO of the _Dante Alighieri_, the message is both personal and informative. He expresses regret for not being able to visit Genoa before departing for a campaign. The language offers emotional and human insight into naval life between wars.

Gent.ma Sig.na Iolanda
oggi imbarcai sulla “Dante”
con ciò non potrei ottenere permesso
per venir a Genova.
Sono malcontento perché
presto partiremo forse il 15 per
Napoli e oltre...
Attendendo Sue notizie, come
pure delle Signore Lita, della
Sig.na Mafalda e di Maria Ester,
Le invio i miei affettuosi saluti.

English Translation:
Dearest Miss Iolanda,
Today I boarded the "Dante".
Therefore I won’t be able to get leave
to come to Genoa.
I am disappointed because
we will soon depart, perhaps on the 15th,
for Naples and beyond...
Waiting for your news, as well as
from the ladies Lita, Miss Mafalda, and Maria Ester,
I send you my affectionate regards.
Yours sincerely,
Giuseppe Portimeato
Lieutenant, R.N. "Dante Alighieri"
Spezia, 7 November 1923
