NETHERLANDS #537 (x2) & 893 STAMPS ENGLAND TYPE 17 & 19 CUSTOMS SEAL COVER 1996 NETHERLANDS #537 (x2) & 893 STAMPS ENGLAND TYPE 17 & 19 CUSTOMS SEAL COVER 1996 Click images to enlarge Description NETHERLANDS Scott # 537 (x2) & 893 stamps tied by March 12, 1996 Assen Bremstraat cds (s) on commercial cover sent to Surrey, England. This cover wasn't registered yet still opened for customs inspection with type 17 clear tape at right from reverse side and type 19 customs examination label added on reverse and overlapping the tape. The tape was intended for use in reclosing packages and the yellow label would normally be found folded across the opened end of the cover. This is the earliest known usage reported for the type 19 seal. (Type 17, Imprint: (None), Crown: (None), Perf: Tape, Text: "Post Office" in double line oval two lines, EKU 5/3/1984) // (Type 19, Imprint: (None), Crown: (None), Perf: Die Cut, Text: Royal Mail logo and "Customs Examination", EKU: 3/14/1996) Unlike many countries, where the same seal was used in many roles such as repair, closing mail found open, customs inspection or used in the DLO, Great Britain created seals with different designs for each task. Seals specifically designated for the closure of mail after customs inspection have been used since 1941. Like the repair seals and tapes, these seals had the initials of the monarch and a crown as major design elements for the first 40 years of their use. The modern seals and tapes are more streamlined. Sent 1996, beautiful as is condition. (Seals / Tapes by definition were used to repair damaged mail caused by a wide variety of conditions and found in a wide range of condition.) This cover appeared in the exhibit of the late Jim Kotanchik's Gold Medal award winning exhibit, "Official Seals of Great Britain" The exhibit was probably last shown at Westpex in 2009. It is possible that some of the information contained therein is no longer current. Jim Kotanchik was a highly regarded expert in worldwide seals.
