Item Description
RARE POSTAL CARD addressed to RICHARD OTTE of GOEBBELS FAME: 1c Jefferson; (Scott #UX27), two Presidential Series stamps added, 5c & 25c to pay for airmail, (Scott #810 & 829), all tied by NYC Grand Central Station duplex Sep 28 1940 postmarks, addressed Mr Richard Otte / Post Podbabob / Prag / Sedlec 208 / Bohemia, Bohemia was in Czechoslovakia and at this point controlled by Nazi Germany, censored four or five times including with Eagle and swastika handstamp which also cancels the stamps (unusual thus), reverse reads (as far as I can tell) Both your cards of the 5th and 9th have been received and I cabled you yesterday. So far I have not found passage on a Japanese steamship. Maybe it's possible in Berlin or I have to try to book on an American steamer, which would be first class only. I just heard there is a possibility from Lisbon - maybe its open again. . . The credit in Harbin (China) and Kobe (Japan) would be open, if I heard you are ready. With Hans and us, everything is OK and I hope that everything over there is in good order. Many greetings from us to you, and to Josa (he writes 1. Josa) and his loved ones, so this means someone was trying to get out of Germany, the Harbin & Kobe remark is highly unusual and may be why this was checked so carefully, could be someone attempting to escape but the cable and credit references point to someone of means, some very light wrinkling, a rare and important card! VF.So. Who was Richard Otte? Richard Otte was Joseph Goebbels' personal stenographer who took down his diary information starting in 1941. The diaries are controversial and have been published piecemeal over the years. Otte lived in Germany until his death and never spoke ill of Goebbels.
Is it possible that this is a different Richard Otte? Yes. However, I don't think so, especially since the only other Richard Otte I have found from this period in Germany or Czechoslovakia was 12 years old in 1940. BUT I CAN'T GUARANTEE IT. Remember this card is a great rarity due to the content and the 30c airmail rate which is scarce for Postal Cards, so you have a powerful postal history piece regardless. I've owned this card for 14 years and recently tried to get a German dealer and a historian to sit down and dope out the address. Otte moved around and worked for Goebbels before becoming his personal secretary, so the Poste Restante address is conceivable. Why he wanted to leave Germany is not clear, but it is possible he wanted out until he was given a better position. By 1941 it would have been nearly impossible to leave, even for non-Jews. The most convincing thing about the card is the hail from the sender (also an Otte) an dich die 1. Josa. Goebbels liked to think of himself as "number 1" in his office and it may have been a nickname. It is CLEARLY a one not an “I.” If you want to argue the point, please email me.
I will combine shipping. Just ask.
Please no cash or stamps.
