Italy, Scott #B20, (Sassone #169)(MIchel #206)(Yvert&Tellier #163)(Stanley Gibbons #172), used (o), 1924, Charity Holy Year Issue, proceeds of the charity surcharge to defray the costs associate with the celebration of the Holy Year, stamp shows the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary the Great) facing the Piazza dell'Esquilino in the 15th Administative District (Rione) on the Esquiline Hill, in the dead center of ancient Rome; the original building was built under Pope Celestine I (422-432) and has had considerable additions and improvements in the intervening years, it is one of the four major papal basilicas and one of the seven pilgrim churches in Rome; it is the largest church in Rome that is dedicated the the Holy Mother, and is regarded as the first Marian sanctuary in the Western World; it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site; stamp is backsigned certified by Giovanni Chiavarello, (20+10) centesimi, typography printed by Staderini, Roma, perforated: 12, watermarked: crown (Scott watermark #149)(Sassone filigrana corona), bicolor: dark green and brown, Scott 2025 catalog value: $12.00, very slightly off-centered (extremely fine) which is very good for the issue as most stamps of the period are greatly off-centered, double struck cancelled, both, black-inked, double-rimmed, circular, socked-on-the-nose cancellations with mailing details bridges and considerable mailing details, the larger cancel is three-quarters circular, centered left and up from middle and extending over most the left front of the stamp, the second, slightly smaller is half circular over the right third of the stamp with almost complete mailing details over the right half of the stamp and well over the main image, sound back, with penciled identification marks and authentication (Chiavarllo) back signed mark, off-positioned hinge remnant on the back left, good perforations; centering, mailing details cancels, and backsigned certification warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offering. The stamp you see will be the stamp you receive.
