Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1105 (Used – Single Stamp)3¢ Violet – James Monroe, 1958
(Liberty Series – Rotary Press Printing, Perf 11 x 10½, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Issued April 28, 1958, the 3¢ James Monroe commemorative honors the 200th anniversary of Monroe’s birth. Designed by Charles R. Chickering and engraved by Richard M. Bower and George A. Payne, it presents Monroe’s right-facing portrait framed by “U.S.” at left and the dual years “1758–1958.” The denomination sits within a braided oval at the upper left, symbolizing continuity and national unity. This example is a used single with no original gum, previously hinged.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
All perforations are clear of the design, but margins show mild imbalance. The top margin is broadest, the left is narrowest, while bottom and right are nearly equal but slightly reduced. Vertical centering is high, leaving a fuller top margin. These characteristics correspond to Fine/Very Fine centering under the PSE 2009 criteria.
Soundness Evaluation:
Faults include a small thin measuring roughly 2–3 mm, several perf creases near the lower right, ragged and shorter perforations about half normal length, and a light diagonal crease visible under magnification. Under the PSE Table of Soundness, this combination of one “Fault” and several “Minor Faults” qualifies as a Major Fault, defined as two or more combined minor faults.
Soundness Classification: Major Fault
Soundness Deduction: –45 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations measure 11 x 10½, typical of rotary press issues. They are intact, though rough along the right and bottom edges, consistent with the coarse separation of the Liberty Series sheets. The top margin provides the strongest visual anchor, while the left margin is tightest but still clear of the design. No evidence of reperforation or trimming is present.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The black wavy-line machine cancel passes diagonally across the design but leaves the portrait and inscriptions legible. It is uniform, well-placed, and consistent with normal postal handling. Classified under PSE standards as a Neat/Clean cancel, it exerts no numerical deduction.
Collector’s Note:
Despite notable physical flaws, this stamp retains crisp violet coloration and a legible design. The 1958 Monroe issue remains popular among collectors of Liberty Series commemoratives for its clean engraving and historical appeal.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color is rich violet with no signs of oxidation. Paper is lightly toned on the back but remains bright on the face. The design’s clarity and balanced appearance yield slightly above-average presentation for a used mid-century example.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: +2 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –45 (Major Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 33 (Good)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: +2 (Fresh color, good contrast)
Final Grade: 35 (Good/Very Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1105
Condition: Used, Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Major Fault (Thin, perf creases, ragged perfs, light crease) –45
Perforations: 11 x 10½, full but uneven
Cancellation: Neat/Clean wavy-line, legible design
Eye Appeal: +2 (Above-average color and clarity)
Final Grade: 35 (Good/Very Good)
Summary:
This used 3¢ James Monroe stamp exhibits Fine/Very Fine centering and strong color but shows multiple physical defects including a small thin, creases, and rough perforations. The cancellation is moderate and does not impair the portrait. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, the resulting final grade is 35 (Good/Very Good)—a visually balanced, service-used example representing the Liberty Series with acceptable appearance and collectible character.
