Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1106 (Used – Single Stamp)3¢ Green – Minnesota Statehood, 1958
(Commemorative Issue – Rotary Press Printing, Perf 11 x 10½, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Issued May 11, 1958, this 3¢ commemorative marks the 100th anniversary of Minnesota’s admission to the Union. Designed by Leonard Everett Fisher, it features a northern landscape of Lake Itasca, the source of the Mississippi River, framed by pine branches and forests. “MINNESOTA STATEHOOD 1858–1958” spans the top, while the denomination appears in an oval medallion at the lower right. The presented example is a used single, never hinged, and lacking original gum as expected from postally used material.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 85 (Very Fine/Extremely Fine)
The design is evenly balanced with all margins full and clear of the perforations. The right margin is narrowest, the top is broadest, and the left and bottom are equal, producing mild rightward bias but good overall symmetry. The design remains well framed and meets the PSE definition of Very Fine to Extremely Fine centering.
Soundness Evaluation:
Two minor issues are present: residual gum in small patches and several light perf creases visible under angled light. Under the 2009 PSE Table of Soundness, this combination qualifies as a Fault, defined as two or three minor faults or a mix of minor and very minor faults.
Soundness Classification: Fault
Soundness Deduction: –30 points
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations gauge 11 x 10½, consistent with rotary press production. All are intact, though the left and bottom edges show slight roughness typical of machine-separated sheets. The right perforations approach but do not touch the design, and all four sides show complete margins. No trimming or reperforation is evident.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp carries a neat, horizontal machine cancel lightly crossing the design. It is well placed, not obscuring the main image or inscriptions. Classified by the PSE Guide as a Neat/Clean cancel, it produces no numeric deduction.
Collector’s Note:
This issue is admired for its subtle engraving and balanced composition, evoking Minnesota’s natural beauty. Despite handling faults, the example retains sharp color and crisp linework, making it a collectible representative of 1950s U.S. commemoratives.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color remains vivid green with fresh impression and clean paper tone. The light cancel and overall visual harmony justify a modest positive adjustment.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: +2 points
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 85 (Very Fine/Extremely Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –30 (Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 55 (Very Good)
Eye Appeal Adjustment: +2 (Strong color and freshness)
Final Grade: 57 (Very Good/Fine)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1106
Condition: Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 85 (Very Fine/Extremely Fine)
Soundness: Fault (Partial gum, perf creases) –30
Perforations: 11 x 10½, full and intact
Cancellation: Neat/Clean, light machine strike
Eye Appeal: +2 (Fresh color, crisp detail)
Final Grade: 57 (Very Good/Fine)
Summary:
This used 3¢ Minnesota Statehood commemorative shows Very Fine/Extremely Fine centering with intact perforations and light machine cancel. Minor soundness flaws—partial gum retention and perf creases—reduce the grade, but its color and clarity remain strong. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, this example receives a final grade of 57 (Very Good/Fine), representing a well-centered and visually appealing used example of this 1958 issue.
