Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1110 (Used – Single Stamp)4¢ Brown – Simón Bolívar, 1958
(Champion of Liberty Series – Rotary Press Printing, Perf 11 × 10½, No Watermark)
Design Overview:
Issued July 24, 1958, this 4¢ brown stamp honors Simón Bolívar, the South American “Liberator” who led the fight for independence in multiple nations. Designed by Charles R. Chickering and engraved by M. D. Fenton, it depicts Bolívar within a medallion framed by the inscription “1783 SIMON BOLIVAR – THE LIBERATOR 1830.” A torch and laurel symbolize freedom under the legend “CHAMPION OF LIBERTY.” Printed by rotary press on white wove paper, this stamp is part of the definitive Champion of Liberty series. The submitted example is postally used with visible wear.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine). The design is clear of perforations on all sides. The top margin is the most narrow and the left the widest, while bottom and right are equally narrow. The image sits slightly high and right but remains balanced within Fine/Very Fine limits under PSE 2009 definitions for rotary press issues.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp shows a heavy crease running through the lower right quadrant and several perf creases visible under magnification. No tears or thins are present, but the paper distortion is strong. Under the PSE Table of Soundness, a heavy crease qualifies as a Major Fault, and combined perf creases reinforce that classification. Deduction: –45.
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations gauge 11 × 10½ and are complete. Top edge shows minor roughness from handling and cancel pressure but no evidence of reperforation or trimming. Margins align with the centering description—top and right narrow, bottom and left broader but well clear of design.
Cancellation Evaluation:
A black machine cancel of parallel wavy lines runs horizontally across the stamp. It covers the portrait and upper inscription but leaves the design legible. This meets the PSE definition of a Heavy cancel (–10 possible). Because the design remains visible, no additional eye-appeal reduction is taken.
Collector’s Note:
Used examples of the Bolívar issue vary widely in quality. This one, though creased, retains authentic perforations and a clearly struck machine cancel. It represents a typical postally used copy whose major faults define its grade but not its collectibility.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color remains warm and even for the issue. Cancel placement is average and does not obscure the entire design. Paper retains ordinary freshness. Per PSE guidelines for used stamps (color, impression, cancel clarity ±10/–20), no further change is warranted. Adjustment: 0.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –45 (Major Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 34
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 34 (Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1110
Condition: Used, Original Gum Lost from Use
Centering: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Major Fault (heavy crease and several perf creases) –45
Perforations: 11 × 10½, intact with minor roughness
Cancellation: Heavy black wavy-line machine cancel across portrait
Eye Appeal: 0 adjustment; color even and design legible
Final Grade: 34 (Good)
Summary:
This used 4¢ Simón Bolívar stamp shows Fine/Very Fine centering with the top margin narrowest and left widest. A heavy crease and multiple perf creases create a Major Fault deduction, lowering the grade to Good. Still, the stamp retains clear design details, genuine perforations, and consistent color, offering a representative example of the Champion of Liberty issue under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide with a final numerical grade of 34 (Good).
