Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1133 (Used, Never Hinged – Single Stamp)4¢ Multicolor – Soil Conservation, 1959
(Commemorative Issue – Engraved, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Issued in 1959 to promote national awareness of modern soil conservation practices, Scott #1133 presents a detailed agricultural landscape engraved in blue, green, and orange. The scene depicts terraced slopes, a farmstead, contour-plowed fields, grazing livestock, and distant industrial structures—symbolizing both rural stewardship and growing environmental responsibility. The bold SOIL CONSERVATION title stretches across the top, reinforcing the educational intent of the stamp.
The provided example is postally used, has no original gum, and has never been hinged since removal.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
All perforation holes are visibly clear of the design. The left margin is the narrowest, the bottom margin the widest, and the top margin narrower than the right. These align with the PSE definition of Fine/Very Fine centering: generally balanced but with one or two noticeably narrow margins.
Soundness Evaluation:
Faults Present:
Extremely Minor Fault: One shorter perf (about half normal length)
Extremely Minor Fault: Second shorter perf (about half normal length)
Two extremely minor faults constitute a Very Minor Fault category under the PSE soundness table.
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction: –6
Per the 2009 PSE grid, Very Minor Fault soundness paired with Fine/Very Fine centering yields a Fine (70–74) result.
Perforations and Margins:
Perforated 11 on all four sides. Two perf tips are shorter than typical but remain structurally intact and do not reach the Minor Fault threshold. No reperforation, trimming, or irregular tooth patterns are present. Margin configuration matches the centering notes: left narrowest, bottom widest, top slightly narrow.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp bears a medium-density wavy-line machine cancel, which passes through the center of the design and across the key landscape area. It obscures some artwork but does not fully overwhelm it. This fits the Heavy Cancel classification in PSE’s used-stamp guidelines.
Cancellation Classification: Heavy
Eye Appeal Impact: –8
Collector’s Note:
Used examples of this issue frequently show heavy machine cancels, and this one is no exception. Despite the cancellation and the two short perfs, the centering is above average for used material, giving the stamp stable visual balance and good overall display appeal.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color remains strong and the engraving crisp. The cancel is heavy but not obliterating.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –8
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –6 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –8
Final Grade: 64 (Very Good–Fine)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1133
Condition: Used, Never Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (two short perfs), –6
Perforations: Perf 11, two shorter tips, otherwise intact
Cancellation: Heavy wavy-line machine cancel, –8
Eye Appeal: –8
Final Grade: 64 (Very Good–Fine)
Summary:
This used Scott #1133 shows Fine/Very Fine centering with clean perforations aside from two short perf tips. A heavy wavy cancel and very minor soundness faults result in a final grade of 64 (VG–F), consistent with the 2009 PSE Grading Guide. Despite its deductions, the stamp retains good color and solid visual balance for a used example.
