Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1167 (Used – Single Stamp)4¢ Multicolor – Camp Fire Girls 1910–1960
(Commemorative Issue – Engraved & Typographed, Rotary Press, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Issued in 1960 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Camp Fire Girls, Scott #1167 features the organization’s triangular emblem, containing stylized crossed logs beneath a bright red flame. Blue radiating arcs evoke movement and growth, reflecting the group’s youth-development mission. The years 1910 and 1960 appear at top, anchoring the commemorative theme. The denomination, in bold red, and “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” complete the lower inscription. The submitted example is postally used, previously hinged, and retains no original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine).
The margins remain fully clear of the design, with the top margin the narrowest and the bottom the broadest. The left margin is slightly narrower than the right. The overall margin profile fits the Fine/Very Fine definition, with one or two visibly narrow sides but no impingement on the design.
Soundness Evaluation:
This example presents a cluster of faults: a major thin (qualifying as a Major Fault), heavy dirt smudging on the back, and multiple perf creases.
Major Fault: Large thin, or two small thins, or three tiny thins.
Minor Faults: Heavy dirt smudging/spotting on back; multiple perf creases.
Under the PSE 2009 model, a Major Fault combined with additional minor faults solidly places the stamp in the Major Fault category.
Soundness Classification: Major Fault.
With Fine/Very Fine centering, Major Fault soundness yields a Good (30–34) result. A –45 deduction is correct.
Perforations and Margins:
Perforations gauge 11 and remain intact, though several perf tips show creasing consistent with handling. No evidence of reperforation, trimming, or irregular hole spacing is detected. Margin distribution is consistent with the centering analysis: narrowest at top, widest at bottom, with left slightly narrower than right.
Cancellation Evaluation:
The stamp bears a bold black machine cancel crossing the left side of the emblem and extending through the lower inscription. This is a Heavy cancel under PSE definitions, as it obscures portions of the central design and typography, though not to an obliterating degree.
Eye appeal cancel classification: Heavy (up to –10).
Collector’s Note:
Despite its structural faults, the front design remains colorful and well-impressed. Used examples of mid-century commemoratives are plentiful, but this issue still enjoys thematic appeal among youth-organization and Americana collectors.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color and impression remain strong, with no fading. The heavy cancel reduces the design’s clarity but not severely enough to merit the maximum penalty. A –8 adjustment is appropriate.
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –8.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –45 (Major Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 32
Eye Appeal Adjustment: –8
Final Grade: 24 (Fair/Good)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1167
Condition: Used, Previously Hinged, No Original Gum
Centering: 77 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Major Fault (–45), including thin, heavy smudging, and perf creases
Perforations: Perf 11, intact but creased
Cancellation: Heavy machine cancel, partially obscuring design
Eye Appeal: –8, due to cancellation impact
Final Grade: 24 (Fair/Good)
Summary:
This used Scott #1167 shows attractive color and above-average centering, yet its major thin, heavy back smudging, perf creases, and forceful cancel significantly affect its grade. Under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide, the stamp concludes at 24 (Fair/Good), still serviceable for a used commemorative collector seeking a low-cost filler with strong front color despite its structural flaws.
