Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #1209 (Used – Single Stamp)1¢ Green – Andrew Jackson, 1960
(Andrew Jackson Definitive Issue – Engraved, Perf 11, Unwatermarked)
Design Overview:
Scott #1209 (1960) depicts a right-facing engraved portrait of Andrew Jackson in a rectangular frame, with “U.S. POSTAGE” at the bottom and “ANDREW JACKSON” reading vertically along the right side. The engraved line work is crisp and densely hatched, typical of mid-century BEP definitives. The submitted example is postally used, has no original gum, and hinging is not noted per instructions.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
With the unaided eye, the perforation holes are clearly free of the design, though one or two margins are narrow. The bottom margin is the most narrow and the top margin is the least narrow. The left margin is narrower than the right. Overall balance and clearance of the design are consistent with the 2009 PSE Fine/Very Fine centering definition.
Soundness Evaluation:
Extremely Minor Fault: One shorter perforation tooth, about half normal length (x3)
Soundness Classification: Very Minor Fault
Soundness Deduction Applied: –6
Three separate extremely minor short perfs, taken together, support the Very Minor Fault classification used here.
Perforations and Margins:
Perf 11 is consistent for the issue. Perforations are otherwise intact, with three noticeably shortened teeth accounting for the soundness deduction. Margins align with the 78 centering assessment, with the bottom closest and the top most generous.
Cancellation Evaluation:
A light machine cancel is present, primarily along the upper portion of the stamp. It does not materially obscure the portrait, denomination, or inscriptions, and remains a typical, non-distracting strike for a used example.
Collector’s Note:
This is a nicely centered used Jackson with a light cancel; the shortened teeth are a measurable defect, but the stamp still reads cleanly on display.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
Color remains even, the portrait engraving is clear, and the cancel is light. No additional eye-appeal adjustment is applied.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –6 (Very Minor Fault)
Adjusted Base Grade: 72
Eye Appeal Adjustment: ±0
Final Grade: 72 (Fine)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: 1209
Condition: Used, No Gum
Centering: 78 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Very Minor Fault (three shorter perfs, –6)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact with three shortened teeth
Cancellation: Light machine cancel
Eye Appeal: No adjustment
Final Grade: 72 (Fine)
Summary:
This used Scott #1209 offers Fine/Very Fine centering and a light, unobtrusive machine cancel, with soundness limited by three shortened perforation teeth that combine to a Very Minor Fault. Following the 2009 PSE Grading Guide sequence and strict arithmetic, the correct final grade is 72 (Fine).
