Item Description
United States, Scott #2040 (Michel #1628)(Yvert&Tellier #1474)(Stanley Gibbons #2028), used(o), 1984, Commemorating the 300th Anniversary of the First German Immigrants to the United States, stamp shows a likeness of the Immigrant Ship (der Einwanderer Segelschiff) “The Concord”, as no drawing of the actual ship exists; on July 6, 1683, a group of 13 German Mennonite families, 33 people in total, boarded the ‘The Concord’ in the Dutch port of Rotterdam, for America; they had left their homes in Krefeld in the Rhine Valley where they had endured persecution for their religious faith; they arrived on October 6, 1683 after a three-month voyage; the ship has since come to be known as the ‘German Mayflower’; they settled on a pre-arranged tract of land north of Philadelphia, first known as Armentown, which translates as ‘the town of the poor’; arriving close to winter, they dug cellars into the ground that served as their homes that first year; the following year they built new homes, grew flax, set up looms and worked in weaving, tailoring, and shoemaking; by the end of the 1600s, their town, which by then had become known as Germantown, had a Main Street lined with peach trees, a central market, and a school; they established mills along the streams and grew flowers and vegetables in their three-acre plots; they also wrote a town resolution against slavery; today, because of this document, Germantown is considered the birthplace of the anti-slavery movement in America; issued in panes of 50 like stamps at a counter value of 20 cents each; perforated at scale: 11, engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), brown, {stamp is a joint issue with Germany, their Scott #1397, Michel #1180}; Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered (very fine), light, black inked, wavy line cancellation across the front of the stamp; however, the lightness of the cancel leaves the main image mostly clear, sound back, good perforations; centering and largely image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.70 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.78 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
