Item Description
United States, Scott #2784a, used(o) pair of Scott #2783 and #2784, 1993, Honoring the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community as well as one of the primary ways they communicate - through the American Sign Language; as many well-known individuals such as composer Ludwig van Beethoven, author Helen Keller, and actress Marlee Matlin have proven, deafness need not hinder one’s life achievements; thanks to the work of pioneers like Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Alexander Graham Bell, a lifelong proponent of deaf education, deaf people can be helped to lead very rich and fulfilling lives; it was Gallaudet who brought the first sign language, developed in France, to the United States in 1817; credit for the first practical sign language program began in France when Abbé Charles Michel de l'Épée opened a school for deaf children in Paris in 1755; one of his most famous graduates was one Laurent Clerc who was brought to America by Gallaudet; they together found the Hartford School for the Deaf in that same year; using a philosophy known as ‘total communication,’ which includes sign language, lip reading, and oral speech, deaf people can now communicate with one another, as well as with hearing individuals; today, many deaf people in the United States use the American Sign language, which is based on using ideas and concepts to speed the transmission to match voice transmission, rather than using individual letters or words which would be much slower; the stamp illustrates one such combination; the ‘I Love You” of the stamp is one such sign; it combines uses just letters from the manual alphabet (where different finger positions represent each letter of the alphabet) – I Love You – to form one sign by which the message ’I love you' is transmitted, the post office commissioned experienced stamp artist Christopher Calle to work on the project; it proved difficult to capture the skill of signing, the technique of message composition, and the need to capture attention and emotion all in one scene, so it was decided to use two scenes for the task, resulting in only the second time in 12 years for the post office to issue a se-tenant pair of stamps; 29 cents each, photogravure printed by Stamp Venturers, perforated at scale 11½, phosphorus tagged paper, issued in panes of 20 stamps, two pairs across, five lines down, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 75¢, nicely centered (superb) for each stamp, cancellation is only on the right side stamp, the vertical beginning of a black-inked multi-line scripted message cancellation on the top half of the right stamp, sound backs, stamp picked up some red staining from its mailing envelope on the back, staining is not carried through to the front, good perforations; centering, pairing, and largely image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
