Quite a colorful history on this statue and King.
King Kamehameha I, The Great also known as the Garibaldi of Hawaii was responsible for the unification of the seperate Kingdoms that today are the Hawaiian Islands. This great work was created by the American sculptor, Thomas R. Gould at his Florence Italy studio. The first Bronze statue was cast in Paris France in 1880. The first casting was sent toward HAWAII on the ship G.F. Haendel, that ship caught fire in a storm and sank off of the Falkland Islands. A second Bronze statue was cast from the original mold in Paris, that statue made it to Hawaii and was unveiled at the Last Hawaiian Kings coronation in Honolulu February 14,1883 it is still there today. Interestingly the first cast was recovered and now stands near King Kamehameha's Birth Place, the North Kohala district on the Big Island of Hawaii. The statue has been recast at least twice, one is in the US capital in Washington DC and one is shown on this personalized postage stamp overlooking Hilo Bay on the Big Island of Hawaii.
