Item Description

The pumpkin face (or goblin) cancel is nicely centered. Because this cancel is clearer when viewed at actual size, I created a second image that is approximately actual size. Scroll over the second image to view it in actual size. 

This stamp has never been mounted in a collection. It is one of about 8,500 copies of Scott 219, 219D and 220x that were in a hoard I inherited. The stamps in this hoard had been collected, soaked off their envelopes and then tightly bound by string or sewing thread in bundles containing 100 each. They were collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana, and possibly across the state line in Union City, Ohio, in the early 1890s. In addition to the above-mentioned stamps, there were 11-12,000 cut squares plus about 3,600 Scott 230 and 231 Columbian Exposition stamps that were similarly bundled. The stamps were packed tightly into vintage Clark O. N. T. thread boxes. The vast majority of the material was very well protected from damage and aging for over a century.

Most of the readable postmarks are from 1891 to 1893, with the majority from 1892. Although mail was coming to Union City from all over the country, much of it seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio and to a lesser degree from smaller communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the fancy and geometric cancels were from Indiana, Ohio and the surrounding states. The post office that produced this killer has not been identified.
