Scott Catalog Number: C1 Denomination: 6 Cents Subject: Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" Biplane Condition: Mint, Never Hinged (MNH) Scott Catalog Number: C2 Denomination: 16 Cents Subject: Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" Biplane Condition: Mint, Hinged (MH) Scott Catalog Number: C3 Denomination: 24 Cents Subject: Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" Biplane Condition: Mint, Hinged (MH) Historical Context: This series was the first set of stamps issued by the U.S. Post Office specifically for airmail service. The stamps were issued to meet the evolving postage rates for the new airmail route between Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. The 24-cent rate was in effect from May 15 to July 15, 1918; the 16-cent rate from July 15 to December 15, 1918; and the 6-cent rate thereafter. The 24-cent stamp (Scott #C3) is famous for the "Inverted Jenny" variety, where the blue airplane vignette was printed upside down in relation to the carmine rose frame on a single sheet of 100 stamps.
