Item Description
Inflationary Period Cover with both the $50,000 Airmail Rate (per 10g) and the $20,000 Surface Rate (1st 20g) in effect only 16 Days (16-31 May 1948). The cover is canceled: " 海上 " (Shanghai reading right to left) / "18.3.48" | 12 (18 March 1948 12 noon) / "SHANGHAI." The Western style date required by the UPU for international mail was used.A 1948 commercially used Chinese Inflationary Period cover from Bank of America in Shanghai, China to Los Gatos, California, franked with two stamps totaling $70,000.00 in Chinese National Currency. The first stamp (red frame with green Dr. Sun portrait) is denominated $20,000.00 and pays the $20,000.00 Unified Overseas SURFACE Rate for the 1st 20 grams. The second stamp (green frame with blue Dr. Sun portrait) is denominated $50,000.00 and pays the $50,000.00 Unified Overseas AIRMAIL Rate for the 1st 10 grams. The two rates were required for mailing, thus the entire mailing piece weighed no more than 10 grams. Both the $20,000.00 Surface Rate and the $50,000.00 Airmail Rate were in effect for only 16 days from 16-31 March 1948, immediately followed by more inflationary rate increases. Reference: “Chinese International Airmail 1931 to 1949,” Exhibit by Frank Warton, China Stamp Society, which is available on-line.
We know of only two covers with this 16 day $70,000.00 day single letter rate -- the one listed here and the one pictured in Warton's Exhibit. Both covers are franked with the same $20,000.00 and $50,000.00 stamps, but his was flown airmail to Glasgow, Scotland and canceled 23 March 1948. Other examples of this $70,000.00 single letter rate seem nonexistent. The item in this listing has a horizontal fold near the top of the envelope visible in the scans and is priced accordingly.
