Browse by Country/Catalog (not just for sorting anymore!)

I'm trying to put out an email to all of our current sellers shortly, but I'm a little behind at the moment - so I apologize for the delay. I know there's been many great questions, and I'm looking to address many of them shortly.

One question has been with regards to Country/Catalog numbers - why are they specific fields, what's our goal here, etc. Well, this should give you an idea of a key part of the vision. In addition to the standard Browse/Search experience, I'm building a full Catalog Browse/Search experience, where you can browse the catalog directly for items for sale. Here's an example using Australia:
https://www.hipstamp.com/catalog/volume/australia/27

There's still some work to do to better autocomplete these values from existing listings which we're still working on - but this should give you a pretty good idea.

  • I was wondering if it was going to be a catalogue with single representative images similar to Stampworld. It looks like it's being based off a Scott catalogue numbering system? Is that the intent, without labeling it as such?

Ouch. all my listings use SG numbers, so my extensive Australia, for example, will not appear in the catalogue?

If only we had a community driven crossreference index for SG, Scott, Michel, Facit, Sakura, Sassone, Y&T, Zagorsky...
  • Seems to me that a cross ref should be devloped under the aegis of the APS available to members.
  • I was thinking of it as a tool that Mark could provide, that would then integrate into the HS Catalog, Catalog# search and the sort by catalog/country. So, for example , I could update it with SG numbers for my 3,000 or so listings, which would then show up in the Catalog, searches and sorting.
  • That's a great idea. I was actually thinking of something very similar. That wouldn't be too difficult to set up, as we would just need to allow for information to be submitted to each Catalog Item in the Catalog section, such as other corresponding Catalog Numbers. I'll add this to the to-do list.
  • Excellent Mark! This could solve all my international dilemmas :)
  • New guy here, so maybe I haven't done enough homework yet to know the answer to this already. Is the assumption that the catalog number being loaded with each item is the Scott #? As mentioned above, some are listing using SG numbers. Is it possible to add an additional field that indicates which catalog is being referenced? In other words, I would separately identify country, catalog, and catalog # for each of my listings.
  • At the moment, we use Scott numbers by default, and any other catalogs are prepended with their respective initials, for example SG103 for Stanley Gibbons, etc.

However, we will be making some updates in the future to enhance how this is done, and better support multiple catalogs.
