Why are Booklets considered a Stamp Type and not a Stamp Format?

It just seems backwards to me as a booklet is a format. A certain stamp could be available in a variety of formats; coil, sheet, booklet, etc... Whereas type conveys different usage (general issue, airmail, etc). By having booklets in stamp type it precludes differentiating between a general issue booklet and an airmail booklet.

Just wondering if there was some other reason I'm missing.

  • The full booklet is a Stamp Type, but a Booklet Pane is a Stamp Format. Currently Booklet Panes are grouped in the "Multiples" option under Stamp Format. However, we are currently reviewing whether we can split Booklet Panes out separately in Stamp Format.
  • So the correct way to list a full booklet would be:
    Format: Multiple
    Type: Booklet?

Just want to make sure things end up in the right place.
  • I just ran into this problem when listing about 50 booklets last night, before reading this thread. It made more sense to me to choose "Block" rather than "Multiple" (for no real reason other than to me blocks are always rectangular/square where multiples can be any shape.)

My biggest problem was with my airmails. Since I have several more of both to list, I need to find out:
    1. How to list an Airmail Booklet.
    2. How to list an Airmail Booklet Pane.

    Thanks.
  • Back on May 1 Mark mentioned he was considering a Stamp Format of Booklet Pane. YES YES YES. No one is going to look for a booklet pane under Multiples.
  • Yes, I'm running into this as well. ... For Japan, for instance, there are more than a hundred booklet panes (in the "prefecturals", the Scott "Z" numbers), which were only issued in booklet pane format, not in booklet format. But with some issues (usually in the regular commemoratives) that were issued both ways, pane alone, plus booklet. Some collectors collect one type but not the other. It'd be great to have a clear way to categorize them so that either type can be easily found.
