Never been called that before

I have been collecting stamps for many, many years. My friends often introduce me as a stamp collector. The more erudite of these introduce me as a philatelist and even manage to pronounce the word properly. One sophomoric wit introduced me as a philatelist in the bedroom because that is where my stamp collection was located… It was not until last week that someone introduced me as a “timbromaniac”. A new word for me that I thought was worth sharing with all the maniacs here. May the passion remain with you.

  • Bob, before we were "Classic Philatelist" we were originally "Stamp Maniac". The word Timbromania was the term for "stamp collectors" before Philately. However, the French term was considered derogatory, because, back in the day, "mania" was the term for "mental patient", and there for to be a "maniac", meant, you had some mental disorder. Now really, I LOVE Timbromania and am happy to be a Timbro Maniac.
(Now, stop and realize that for a moment "Philatelist" was considered the better choice of term... ><
  • well I was introduced as a stamp broker.
  • I think I recall finding the term "timbrologist", but I don't know when or where.
