Florida -

We will be out of commission for a few days. The hurricane is going to beat us up on the East Coast. Matthew has done a lot of damage to Haiti and Cuba and the Islands will have even more damage.

I'm all set, just a little bit more yard pickup to be done. The sun is shining for the present moment, but that will be changing in the next couple of days. I was hoping it would just go out to sea, but it doesn't look like it will. If only the eye could stay 50 miles off the coast.

So to all our Florida friends, stay safe and check back in with us when the 'cane blows over.

  • Stay safe and hunker down if necessary.
  • Stay safe and sound! You are in our thoughts and prayers!

  • Be safe, Luree!! Hopefully there will be a giant rainbow for you when it's all over!
  • Keep your powder (stamps) dry and stay safe ! Will pray the eye stays far enough off-shore so that the effect on Florida and the entire East Coast is minimal.
  • Thanks guys. We are ready, just a little more work and the yard will be cleared. The Weather Channel is making us all concerned. A very scary storm they way they are talking. And now, North and South Carolina and Georgia are in a State of Emergency, too. Wow is all I can say.

Gas stations were jammed this afternoon, the entrance to BJ's for gas was a major to do. Walgreen's was out of water and people had to park far away from Publix. Glad to see the newbies for 'canes are heeding the advise and preparing.

Way am I not concerned? I don't feel the urgency and yet I know this could be dangerous. Very strange for me to feel comfortable this time. Oh well, ask me again on Thursday and I might have another answer!
  • George, my husband asked me about the more important stamps, what I wanted to do with them. I sort of looked around and thought, they are all important! But I do have some that are pricey, nothing I could retire on, but they are in a safe place. Guess those will go into a special bin to stay drier. If they get damaged, they are only small pieces of pretty colored paper. I'll cry, but that would mean I'm safe with the family.
  • Maybe place them in zip-lock plastic baggies which should help keep them dry. Living in the mid-Hudson Valley of NY State, hurricanes aren't a big factor up here. That said, I'm "SO" looking forward to our first Nor'easter of the winter season which is just around the corner. Usually doesn't affect my stamps other than "forcing" me to hide in my stamp den and work on them....assuming we have power LOL. Keeping my fingers crossed for y'all !

"I'll cry, but that would mean I'm safe with the family.".

My husband spent 12 years with the SBA working with assisting disaster victims for losses to homes and businesses. He was gone 10 to 12 months a year - everywhere from the Islands, Guam, California, 28 other states and NYC (9/11).

Safe with family is all that matters.

You have hurricane parties in Florida ???.
  • Keep safe Luree. Hope Matthew stays out to sea.
  • Carol, I totally respect Mother Nature and the hurricanes. Only fools have hurricane parties. No we bundle up, hunker down, watch the weather channel when the power is on. When it's not on then the husband falls asleep while I listen to the wind beat us up. Now, with that being said ... we do have a lanai that faces East. We have spent lots of time just watching the rain and wind. Until the violence then we run back inside. Same with the front door, I need to be able to see the outside so we do leave something for me to look at.

The two yards cats will be another story. One of them will come in and stay the whole storm. The other one is rather iffy. She spent Wilma time outside when she was just abandoned. She does have a hidey place, but I wouldn't mind if she came in to be safe. Reena, my pup, doesn't mind being with me all the time. She knows I'll protect her.
  • "Only fools have hurricane parties"

I totally agree but they seem to be the thing in the USVI. A co-worker of my husbands lost her 125 foot old minesweeper they had rigged up for charter during Hugo back in '89 when the engines finally overheated. When I flew down to be with my husband on St. John right after Hurricane Marilyn in '95 I flew down and back during "iffy" weather..Mother nature is awesome.

It sounds like you know the drill - stay safe and dry.

  • Stay safe! I'm keeping tabs on my dear sister in Key West also. But i think they will miss it.. hopefully
  • The Key just might be the right place to be. Actually I escape down there in my mind all the time! I stay in Big Pine. Anyway, the storms coming we are in a watch and warning for the West Coast of Florida. This mama's a big one.

I'll check back in whenever we get service back. I know we'll loose service and power.
  • Luree, I hope you, your pets and your stamps all stay safe.
  • This looks really bad, Luree. Hope all turns out well and everyone including pets come through safely.
  • Wayne and Jeri, the yard cats will maybe come in, maybe not. It will really bother me if smallest Rue doesn't come in. Charlie will, he doesn't care where he lays his head to sleep. Reena, well if she has her eye on either of us she's fine.

I'm done with prep. The final load of laundry is being done now. All the dishes are done, food cooking is going on. 2 lbs of bacon and a pizza is cooking. Two pots of coffee has been brewed and we have 14 gallons of water on hand. Camp stove is out with fuel and the lantern with mantels has been located.

We can't do any more except hope and pray Matthew misses us, however, it will make landfall up the coast and around the Vero Beach area will be a concern. Oh but wait, the paths now show three computers have the storm looping around and coming back at us! Been there and that is no fun.

Until I can check back in again ... happy stampin'
  • Sending prayers and good thoughts your way, Luree.
  • With everyone else here thinking of you during all this, Luree. Check in again when you can to keep us posted.
  • I fine. The yard needs a little clean up. Lost some branches from the gumbo-limbo that was cut back a few months ago, lots of palm fronds and a banana tree. The front yard is cluttered with small twigs.

All in all we did very well. Have to be at work at 7 to help put the store back together. I don't imagine the roads will be blocked! I can only hope, would love to stay home another day.

Still gusty outside, listening to the wind go through the shutters. Now for the Melbourne area, that's a little iffy.

Hopefully the rest of our Floridians will check in to let us know they are okay.
  • Great to hear Luree ! I've been watching the news regularly and some of the videos of the storm were pretty startling.
