Watermarking your photographs in listings

Recently I have had a couple of my listings on eBay pirated by a scam re-seller, he used my entire listing including my photographs and my description, even down to the very small deliberate mistake I make in listings. So I have been thinking about watermarking my images in the future listings, so does any one else do this? And if so, what watermarking program do you use.
I look forward to your answers, Thank you, John

  • You can use pretty much any image editor, like Photoshop, IrfanView (free and very good), etc.
  • I used to watermark way back on Bidstart, but a few people complained that it distorted the image, blah, blah. So, I stopped doing.
  • Directly from the Seller Listing Policies of Hipstamp:

Images can not contain any advertisements, promotional material, or watermarks.
  • Honestly, I would be happy if someone found my listing/scan worth stealing. It would make me proud. Plus I seriously doubt that a watermark would give a thief pause (if they are smart enough to recognize what it is). As my grandma used to say "they will be rewarded" (I think she stole that from somewhere).
  • as an occasional author and artist, I'm a strong supporter of intellectual property rights. However, I've never had an interest in worrying about the stamp images associated with my store sales. In fact, I've tried to produce high quality images that may be useful to collectors for years to come. It's just another way to contribute to the hobby. If unethical sellers were to use my images in some manner for their own sales, then that's a major problem.

  • Thanks to all that have answered, and I did not know we could not put watermarks on any images. On second thoughts, it probably is not that useful to use watermarks, it was just that I was mad at some bugger for pinching my whole listing and images.
All remarks are much appreciated, cheers, John
  • For OpenSource users, ImageMagick. I use it on Mac and it can add and remove watermarks.
  • I would think that you could make a case with ebay. Obviously the thief isn't going to be able to deliver on any of his/her sales.
