Has anyone ever seen this watermark visible on the back of stamp

I have a Sc. # 267 Type III that shows the doubleline watermark on the back without any fluid or solution to make it visible. It is in red. Not sure if these stamps are common place..........Peters

It is not usually easy to see watermarks on US stamps. Sometimes, however, you can find one like that. It does nothing to the value.

The watermark is not in red. Watermarks are applied to the paper before printing. Sometimes the watermark is pressed heavily into the paper. The ink would have soaked into the paper area that is the watermark. More information about this can be found in the introduction to the Scott US Specialized Catalogue.

That is the "S" from the watermark of that era , "USPS" which was double-lined (around 1895 Bureau of Printing and Engraving). Not rare, found in those issues. By the way, the "red" is simply the color coming through from the other side. The paper is likely a micron or so thinner there because of the watermark.
  • Thanks again guys......hopefully I can help you out someday.....Peter
