Item Description
1856 – "Gov. Robinson’s Polka." Andrew Whitney. Fitchburg, Massachusetts: Andrew Whitney, 1856. Complete. Approximately 10½’ x 14”.Charles I. Robinson was an abolitionist leader who settled in Kansas to import Freestaters from the Northeast into the territory to wrench political control from the in-place pro-slavery settlers. He perpetuated voter fraud, and his effort to intimidate pro-slavery voters from casting their ballots resulted in the Topeka Convention of 1856 that filled nearly all governing positions in Kansas with abolitionists and created a Free-State Constitution that was eventually rejected by Congress. President Franklin soon after declared Robinson’s violence-imposed government to be revolutionary and ordered the arrest of its leaders including Robinson himself. This music was self-published by a friend in Massachusetts and issued during the short time between Robinson's ‘election’ as governor and his federal arrest as a traitor. There is a piano advertisement on the reverse.
Light toning. Removed from a privately bound album of sheet music, so rough along the left edge.
