Item Description
Approximately 7.75" x 6.5".Change of Command Orders, dated July 29, 1865, from Headquarters, Brook's division ordering Sergeant to "take charge of [the] Ambulance Train" of the 192nf Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
In 1862, Major Jonathan Letterman created the first dedicated ambulance train (a unit of wagon ambulances) just before the Battle of Antietam. The ambulances were used to connect the echeloned system of medical care that Letterman had also designed. Aid station supported Regiments; Mobile Field Hospitals supported divisions and Corps. Ambulance were systematically used to evacuate patients from lower echelons of care to higher ones. Letterman's system revolutionized military medical care, and wounded soldiers were 'cleared' from the battlefield in record times. After it was successfully used at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, Letterman's system was adopted in 1864 for use throughout the army.
In nice shape.
