This is a postal history cover from the 1880s. Postal Route & Markings From: Baltimore, Maryland To: Princeton, New Jersey Sending Postmark: Baltimore, MD, duplex cancel dated May 14 at 8 AM. Receiving Postmark: Princeton, N.J., circular date stamp on the reverse, also dated May 14. Transit: The cover traveled approximately 130 miles and was delivered on the same day. Postage: A 2-cent stamp paid the first-class letter rate. Dating: The stamp used was issued between 1883 and 1887. The addressee was a student at Princeton from 1882-1886. The year of mailing is likely 1884, 1885, or 1886. Addressee and Destination Details The cover is addressed to Francis Fisher Kane (1866-1955), who was a student at the College of New Jersey (Class of 1886) at the time. Kane later became a prominent Philadelphia lawyer and served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The destination, the College of New Jersey, was the official name of the institution that would become Princeton University in 1896.
