Splendid example of use of the first Special Delivery stamp, Scott E1, during the first year of special delivery service (which started October 1, 1885). During that first year, special delivery service was only available at a couple hundred post offices, which is why the stamp is inscribed “secures special delivery at any special delivery office”. Mailed from Boston to Pittsfield, with American machine cancel. Scott $200 for E1 on cover; first year uses are worth a premium. Adding to the interest, the stamps are applied over a penalty imprint, which I have not tried to identify. Slight reduction at left away from stamps and markings; a bit of light age soiling.
