This is a postal history cover from 1896. Postal Route & Markings From: Cazenovia, New York To: Allaire, New Jersey Sending Postmark: Cazenovia, N.Y., circular date stamp dated July 26, 1896 (Sunday). Receiving Postmarks: Two backstamps are present, both dated July 27, 1896 (Monday): Allaire, N.J. New York, N.Y., at 12:30 AM. Transit: The cover traveled approximately 230 miles via New York and was delivered the next day. Postage: A 2-cent stamp paid the first-class letter rate. Envelope and Destination Details The reverse flap of the envelope is embossed with the mark of G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS, 27 & 29 W. 23D ST. N.Y., a prominent New York City publisher and bookseller. The destination, Allaire, New Jersey, is the site of the historic Allaire Village, a former iron-producing factory town from the 19th century. The letter was mailed during the 1896 U.S. Presidential election campaign, just weeks after William Jennings Bryan delivered his famous "Cross of Gold" speech at the Democratic National Convention.Sales History
