Item Description
Carefully selected from a vast collection, this original early 20th-century postcard is an exceptional piece for collectors, historians, and philatelists. Each postcard uniquely combines three key aspects that make it highly attractive:1️ Philatelic: Originally mailed from Eastbourne, England on August 14, 1907, this postcard was first addressed to Paris, France, but then redirected to Brussels, Belgium via Poste Restante. The card carries two green halfpenny Edward VII stamps, both clearly postmarked. The transit and arrival marks on the reverse document the route:
Eastbourne, August 14
Paris, August 17
Brussels (BRUXELLES ARRIVEE), shortly after Such postal redirections are ideal study material for early 20th-century trans-European mail handling.
2️ Aesthetic: The image shows a dramatic seaside view of Splash Point, Eastbourne, with rough waves crashing against the Grand Hotel and promenade. A masterful early printed color postcard, the scene captures the tension between Victorian architecture and nature’s force, a favorite theme in coastal imagery.
3️ Social: The handwritten message in French notes a three-week holiday in Eastbourne and how delightful the weather is. Signed E.J. Smith, the message and multi-country delivery path reflect the mobile elite of Edwardian Europe and their reliance on international postal services to maintain contact across borders.
This is a standout item for Open Class exhibits, combining coastal urban landscape, Anglo-French-Belgian postal history, and social leisure documentation.
