Albin Egger-Lienz was an Austrian painter known especially for rustic genre and historical paintings. Erl is a municipality of 1,400 inhabitants in the Kufstein district in western Austria. It lies 15 km north of the administrative town of Kufstein in the northern part of the Tyrol, at the border with Bavaria, Germany. Settlement began in the third century; Erl is mentioned in documents dating back to A.D. 788. The Passion Play or Easter pageant is a dramatic presentation depicting the Passion of Jesus Christ: his trial, suffering and death. The viewing of and participation in Passion Plays is a traditional part of Lent in several Christian denominations, particularly in the Catholic and Evangelical traditions; as such Passion Plays are often ecumenical Christian productions.
