Scarce 1912 Great Britain Cinderella 1 Pence Violet George V International Stamp Exhibition Block/4 Mint No Gum. Some interesting information: The ideal stamp was a 'label' produced and printed by Waterlow Bros & Layton at the 1912 International Stamp Exhibition, London. The stamps were then sold to the public at 1d each either in perforated or imperforate condition. The stamp came into being as an exercise in stamp printing by Waterlow Bros and Layton, (printers) whilst they were exhibiting their "Wharfedale" printing machine at the International exhibition being held at the Horticultural Hall, (London) between the 11 and 19 August 1912.
The stamp was designed by T. S. Harrison, stamp designer to the printers, (Waterlow's), and along with the points already mentioned, (head, value etc), the background was divided into 4 quarters into which were placed emblems of the British Isles.
The head of King George 5 was shaded by means of vertical lines, probably the first stamp type production to employ this method, later being adopted in regular postage stamp production in various countries.
The term 'Ideal Stamp' appears to have been adopted at the time of the exhibition, probably due to its unique method of production.
At the exhibition the label was sold at the 'face value' of one penny each and these were apparently avaliable in five colours
