1914-1918 France WW I Delandre Poster Stamp 1st Volunteer Division Mountain Artillery Artist Fortunino Matania (Italian 1881-1963) Unused Hinge Remnant 90% Original GumThis Poster Stamp Is A World War One Delandre Propaganda Label Depicting Serbian Mountain Artillery In Action, Issued Around 1915–1917 As Part Of Gaston A. Delandre’s Extensive Series Of Allied-Themed Vignettes. The Central Design Shows A Detailed Illustration Of Serbian Soldiers Operating A Large Field Gun In Rugged Mountain Terrain, With The Crew Surrounded By Ammunition Crates And Rocky Embankments, Symbolizing Serbia’s Resistance Against The Central Powers. The Red Inscription At The Top Reads Ћрдска Артиљерија, Which Translates As “Mountain Artillery,” Highlighting The Specialized Role Of Serbian Forces In Defending Their Homeland’s Difficult Highland Terrain. Delandre Produced Hundreds Of Such Vignettes During The War, Often Using Patriotic And Heroic Imagery To Inspire Support For The Allied Cause And To Generate Funds For Charities, Relief Efforts, And Propaganda Campaigns. The Strong Visual Impact And Clear Nationalist Messaging Made These Labels Highly Collectible At The Time, And They Remain Historically Significant Examples Of Early Twentieth-Century Wartime Ephemera. Some Light Edge Wear From Perforations Is Visible, But The Stamp Retains Its Original Strength And Striking Design. Visible Text (Rewritten In Sentence Form): Serbian: Ћрдска Артиљерија — English Translation: Mountain Artillery. Country Of Origin: France (Delandre Issue, Depicting Serbia). Year Of Issue: Circa 1915–1917BRIEF HISTORY:Gaston Aime Camille Fontanille, Born On 11 May 1883 In Valence And The Son Of A Magistrate, Became Widely Known By His Alias Delandre. He Was A French Entrepreneur, Promoter, And Conman Who Built A Reputation Around His Involvement In Patriotic Poster Stamps During World War I, Now Commonly Known As Delandre Vignettes. The Delandre Vignettes Originated When Fontanille First Reproduced Italian Regimental Labels After The Supply Of Originals Could Not Meet The Demand Of Collectors. From This Starting Point He Expanded His Output To French Army Labels And Other Patriotic Themes, Eventually Producing More Than 4000 Distinct Designs That Today Form A Popular Segment Of Cinderella Philately. When Accused Of Forgery Of Italian Issues He Claimed Instead That They Were Re-Impressions. In A 1916 Letter He Explained That He Sold Three Categories: Genuine Originals, Re-Impressions, And Entirely New Creations Of His Own, And He Even Admitted To Making Successful Facsimiles. The Extent And Detail Of His Work Have Been Catalogued Thoroughly By Charles Kiddle And Walter Schmidt. The French Red Cross Took Notice Of His Success And Commissioned Him To Produce Labels For Their Fundraising. Although He Sold Large Numbers Of These Charity Stamps He Failed To Transfer The Proceeds Owed, And In 1917 He Was Arrested. By 1925 He Was Again Involved In Fraud, This Time Concerning Silver Foxes, And Went On The Run. He Later Resurfaced In Marseille Under The False Identity Of Baron Edmond Picarat, Where He Founded A Fraudulent Leprosy Charity. As Authorities Closed In He Committed Suicide By Poison On 10 March 1927. He Was Initially Buried Under The Name Edmond Picarat Until His True Identity Was Revealed Some Months Later. Delandre Was Involved In Numerous Other Schemes, Including The Fabrication Of A Chemical Company In Which He Appointed Prominent Businessmen To Directorships Without Their Knowledge, As Well As The Sale Of Dubious Noble Titles. Over His Career He Used Multiple Pseudonyms, Including Commander Deville, The Baron Allard, The Marquis Of Vaurens, And The Count Of Chabanes. Please Note That Any Discoloration, Lines, Or Marks Visible On The Scan Are From The Acetate Or Protective Page Holding The Stamp During Scanning. The Stamp Itself Is Free Of Such Defects Except Those Specifically Mentioned In The Description. I Never Alter Scans To Conceal Or Change The Condition Of A Stamp; The Only Adjustments Made Are Cropping Or Straightening For Clarity. We're Happy To Combine Shipping On Multiple Orders To Help You Save!
