Item Description
Carefully selected from a vast collection, this original early 20th-century postcard is an exceptional piece for collectors, historians, and philatelists. Each postcard uniquely combines three key aspects that make it highly attractive:1️ Philatelic: Although picturing Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this postcard was used from the Shetland Islands (UK) and delivered to Montevideo, Uruguay, bearing a 1½d British stamp (King George VI). It is cancelled with a Shetland Islands postmark and includes a visible arrival marking from Montevideo, suggesting it may have been mailed from a British vessel at sea or transferred between postal jurisdictions en route. The combination of Brazilian imagery with British franking and South American destination is notably rare.
2️ Aesthetic: The view shows Glória, a historic neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, with lush tree-covered hills, neoclassical architecture, and the unmistakable silhouette of Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) in the background. The composition captures the elegance of the bayfront area and the spatial relation between sea, city, and hillscape in early 20th-century Rio.
3️ Social: Addressed to Sr. H. Pandolfo, residing on Paysandú 983, Montevideo, the handwritten message is friendly and informal, referencing musical celebrations, possibly indicating that the addressee was a known musician. The mention of “South America” below the address and routing via Brazil adds to the international context. The note reads: “Esta para saludarte y desearte muchas músicas con afinación divina. ¿Qué tal?” Signed by “tu amigo”.
This postcard is a fine example of intercontinental social exchange, visual culture, and postal routing involving naval or high-seas dispatch, ideal for Open Class exhibits involving transoceanic mail, Rio de Janeiro iconography, or Uruguayan musical history.
