Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army on January 27, 1945. A few weeks before that camp officials had begun evacuating some 60,000 prisoners westwards to camps in Germany to prevent their liberation. This letter is significant because it was likely one of the last pieces of mail to leave Auschwitz before it was liberated by the Red Army.
