1946 Italy Sassone #- 19 30 Centow Polish Corps In Italy War Rescue Fund Unused Hinge Remnant 75% Original Gum. This set of postage stamps was issued by the Polish Resettlement Corps in Italy in 1946. The Corps was created by the British Government for members of the Polish Armed Forces who had served with the British Armed Forces and did not wish to return to Communist Poland after the end of World War II. Members of the Corps who chose to resettle in the United Kingdom signed a two-year contract to serve in the British Armed Forces. These stamps were sold at the Polish post offices in Trani and Barletta in the Apulia Province of SE Italy, with the proceeds benefiting a War Rescue Fund. These Polish Corps in Italy stamps are denominated in Italian currency. One must remember that the Polish II Corps in Italy were the armed forces of the Polish Second Republic Government-in-Exile, located in the United Kingdom. The government-in-exile did not recognize the Communist state that was established by the USSR at the end of World War II, and they continued to exist until the fall of Communism and the establishment of the Polish Third Republic in 1989.
